Watkinson in for Durban Ultra double

Durban – As the 2018 MiWayLife Durban Ultra Triathlon fast approaches, 2017 ladies champion Annah Watkinson will return in a bid to defend her title along the Durban beachfront this Sunday, 4 March.

With a full-time professional corporate career and a professional athletes’ career, juggling the two has become a difficult trick for Watkinson despite her strong performances in the varying distances of triathlons.

Even though she favours the longer distances, the GU-Energy/Garmin athlete is still looking forward to returning to Durban to try and defend her title on what she describes as a faster course.

“I think because I started competing in triathlons a bit later in life I am better at the long distances because I can endure for longer,” the 36 year-old mentioned.

“With that said I am really exciting to be coming back to Durban as the national champion and to be defending my title is an amazing opportunity which gives me a lot of excitement!”

Taking a course for granted can be the downfall of many athletes and despite the Durban beachfront-based course being fairly flat Watkinson maintains that it is far from straight forward.

“I think people are crazy to say that the Durban course, or any course for that matter, is easy!

“Because it is a flat course people could think that but it just means that it is a faster course. On a flat course you go faster but you expend energy more quickly which makes it just as difficult.

“You are consistently pushing yourself hard throughout,” she added.

The approach to this weekend’s race for Watkinson is a simple one; she wants to use the event as a hard training day in preparation for the South African IRON MAN event later in the year.

“My coach and I decided that we want to use this as part of my preparation for the rest of the year because with it being a shorter distance it will be good for me compete on tired legs.

“We discussed that it’s the perfect event to help me prepare for what the second half of IRON MAN is going to feel like and it will definitely help me to feel comfortable racing my body to that limit.

“It’s terrific preparation and there is no better way to train than to race and get into the zone where it is mind over matter,” she explained.

It’s going to be a busy period or Watkinson after the Durban Ultra as she heads west to the America’s for a few events as she builds up to the big one in Hawaii.

“I really want to get to the IRON MAN World Championships in Kona this year,” she mentioned enthusiastically. “I have been there in age group competition but to get there this year and test myself against the best in the world would be incredible.”
