Berg backs new team format

Paarl – The organisers of the annual Berg River Canoe Marathon have given the new team format a thumbs up and will retain it going forward, after a review of the introduction of the new competitive element in this years race held in mid July.

“We are pleased with the response to the introduction of the team format to the competitive aspect of the race,” said race committee head Andre Collins.

“The Berg is 57 years old and steeped in tradition, and at the same time it will adapt and evolve to remain relevant and attractive,” he added.

“The impact on the elite race was very interesting and generated fresh interest in the media and amongst the spectators.”

The next Berg River Canoe Marathon will take place from 3 to 6 July 2019.

Collins was speaking after an open feedback meeting held to canvas the opinions of paddlers of all abilities to changes made to the race.

“For example. There was a clear favourite team in this year’s race in Graeme Solomon and
Adrián Boros, last year’s first and second placed solo paddlers.

“But on Day One Boros got stuck in a tree block so Solomon had to wait, and watch as the rest of the front bunch raced away. That adds a whole new dynamic to the race

“The great thing about introducing the team event is that it in no way compromised the paddler that enjoyed the traditional approach to doing the whole Berg on your own, as there will always place for solo paddlers on the Berg.”

Collins said that the team concept would be retained, and anticipated that its popularity would soon filter down to the paddlers that make up the rest of the field.

“The nature of the Berg really lends itself to paddling with a team mate and I am sure that very soon it will catch on with the average paddlers who are there to just take on the challenge of completing the Berg.

Collins added that the next step in the planning for the 2019 Berg was the formation of the new race committee, which would start as a priority in the coming weeks.
