Proud moment for Change a Life icon

Pietermaritzburg It was a proud landmark moment for Martin Dreyer and his RMB Change A Life Academy when Sthembiso Masango donned his South African team colours for the first time as he prepares to take part in the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships in Singen in Germany on Sunday.

While his mentor and the architect of the Academy Martin Dreyer was riding into Wellington to break his own record in the Freedom Challenge Race Across South Africa, Masango was donning his green and gold race jersey for the first time as part of the national team gearing up for Sunday's world title decider in Germany.

The popular character from the Valley Of A Thousand Hills-based MTB Academy was elated to be at the venue for the world title decider, shadowing SA team mate Amy McDougall.

"This is a dream come true for me," he beamed, reflecting on the support from his sponsors at the RMB Change A Life Academy that had made the trip possible, as the tour to the World Champs was entirely self-funded.

"I am so happy and proud to be here to represent South Africa at the World Champs," he added.

"It was a really emotional moment when he got his kit," said McDougall.

He will join a very powerful field on Sunday for the senior men's 98km, two-lap race through the mountainous Hegau area, close to the border of Switzerland and Germany.

Masango has spent a considerable amount of time riding the course to familiarise himself with the layout, while trying to follow his team mates' advice to include enough rest to ensure his legs are strong for the race on Sunday.

While Masango prepares, his mentor Martin Dreyer will be enjoying a great deal of well-earned sleep, following his staggering 10 days 6 hours and 40 minutes ride from his home town of Pietermaritzburg to Wellington.

He will however bask in the major milestone weekend for himself personally, and the rural MTB Academy that he has now nurtured to international success.
