SA K1 crown up for grabs at Liebenbergsvlei


Reitz – Some of the country’s top river paddlers will be on the start line of the Standard Bank Liebenbergsvlei Canoe Marathon on day one of the race from Reitz to Zorgvlei Farm this weekend.

The race is a two day event however they have split the race into two with day one’s 33km doubling up as the national K1 championships as a number of top paddlers vie for the national crown while day two will be a K2 event and will serve as a qualifier for the upcoming Fish River Canoe Marathon.

Both days will cover the same route and the entry list for this weekend’s racing features a number of the best paddlers in the country.

In the men’s race, multiple national and world champion Hank McGregor has put his name forward to fight it out for the title. Gauteng stars Clinton Cook and Wayne Jacobs have also entered along with a strong contingent of Martin Dreyer’s Change a Life Academy stars.

Also in the mix will be the evergreen veteran Ant Stott who should be in the mix at the sharp end of the field.

The women’s race will be an even more exciting affair with Romania-bound World Marathon Championship paddlers Christie Mackenzie and Jenna Nisbet both on the entry list.

There are also a number of junior paddlers that are on the entry list for this Saturday’s national showdown.

Georgina Howard and Melonie Croeser are entered as they also enter the final preparation phase for their trip to the World Marathon Championships at the end of the month. Also entered is another excited merging junior talent in Valmajean Hockly.
