Khumalo takes next leap in exciting young career
Durban – From the streets of Ntuzuma via Glenwood High School, young
batsman Thamsanqa Khumalo’s rise to a contract with the Hollywoodbets
Dolphins has been an inspiring one and he hopes it’s just the beginning.
Khumalo’s talent was seen early when he was part of the Sunfoil Township
and Rural Development Programme and was awarded a scholarship to Glenwood
High School through the Sunfoil Education Trust.
Following his time at Glenwood, he was selected for the South Africa Under
19 side, and then graduated to the Hollywoodbets KZN Coastal side before
he was given a senior contract with the Dolphins.
“Playing for the Dolphins was always my goal,” the 21-year-old Khumalo
said. “But I didn’t think that from school I would go into the Coastal
side and then straight after that get myself a Dolphins contract.
"Guys like Andile (Phehlukwayo) got contracts with the Dolphins straight
out of school so when I was offered a semi-pro contract I had to take it
and if I put the performances together then I thought that a Dolphins
contract would be next.”
Now that Khumalo has been given the opportunity to showcase his skills at
the highest level of domestic cricket in South Africa, he wants to work
hard and continue his growth as a cricketer with the help of some of the
players at the Dolphins.
“It’s been a big step up to professional cricket and I’m just trying to
learn and take in as much as I can from the guys around me.
“I want to learn as much as possible because you can never stop learning
in cricket, but I know that I need to try and keep it as simple as
possible because I know when I try to do too much I complicate things.”
Being a player that represents the Dolphins across the board is a goal for
Khumalo; however he’s not going to rush himself into that position.
“I am going to be patient but my only goal is to play every format for the
Dolphins and I believe that I can do that.
“When I get an opportunity I must embrace it and make sure that I graft
hard to prove to the coaches that I am capable of playing at this level.”
Making sure that he continues to grow and learns from other players and
the coaches, Khumalo has been drawn to the Dolphins most recent Protea
Keegan Petersen, amongst others.
“I go to KP (Petersen) because I am very comfortable around him and go to
him because of his experience.
“Khaya Zondo is also another guy that I will use for advice because he has
played professional cricket for so many years.
“Also Mduduzi Mbatha, our fielding coach, because he’s been with me since
I was in matric so I know him well,” Khumalo added.
