Dolphins make steady start at overcast Newlands

Durban The Hollywoodbets Dolphins got their CSA 4-Day Domestic Series title defence off to a solid start against the Six Gun Grill Western Province side on an overcast day in Cape Town on Friday.

The Dolphins side was sent in to bat by the hosts and featured four new caps in Thando Ntini, Bryce Parsons, Jason Smith and on-loan wicketkeeper batsman Rubin Hermann.

Starting the match late after a rain delay, opener SJ Erwee was trapped in front by left arm seamer Wayne Parnell for 2 in the second over, bringing Keegan Petersen, who is playing in his 100th first class match, to join debutante Parsons at the crease.

The pair steadied the innings and were starting to score freely before Parsons holed out to mid-on off the bowling of spinner Aviwe Mgijima for 45.

Marques Ackerman and Petersen took the Dolphins to tea at 113/2, with Petersen having gone to his half century.

The final session started dramatically for the Dolphins as Ackerman was adjudged to have nicked a ball from spinner Kyle Simmonds to the fielder at short square leg straight after tea.

Shortly after that Petersen's stand came to an end when he drove Simmonds to cover where a sharp catch from David Bedingham ended his knock on 56.

Dolphins stalwart Khaya Zondo found a willing ally in another debutant Jason Smith as they set about building a fifth wicket partnership in the fading light.

When stumps were finally drawn after 72 over the pair had taken the Hollywoodbets Dolphins to 186/4 overnight, with Zondo returning to the crease on Saturday morning on 29 and Smith with 44 to his name.
