Dolphins keep Province under pressure on opening day

Durban - Thirteen wickets fell on the opening day of the CSA 4-Day Domestic Series clash between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and Six Gun Grill Western Province at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium on Sunday, with the Dolphins trailing overnight by 121 with seven first innings wickets still in hand.

The Capetonians won the toss and elected to bat first, and lost skipper Tony de Zorzi early on to seamer Thando Ntini.

As the match developed it was returning Proteas stars Keshav Maharaj and Keegan Petersen who were able to make an impact on the match.

The wily left-arm spinner Maharaj accounted for Yaseen Valie and Zubayr Hamza to keep the Cobras top order under pressure on the opening day of the clash.

His spin partner Prenelan Subrayen kept up the stranglehold on the visiting batsmen, taking 3/62, including the final wicket of the Cobras innings as Tshepo Moreki was neatly caught by keeper Roelofsen to send the visitors back to the change room for a first innings total of 210 just after tea.

Petersen was in the thick of the action, pulling off a breathtaking catch to remove Mihlali Mpongwana and effecting the run out of Jonathan Bird for 29.

With most of the third session at their disposal the Dolphins set about building their first innings reply, and by the time the umpires lifted the bails, they had reached 89/3, with Slade van Staden set to return to the crease on Monday morning on 19, with Khaya Zondo with him on 16.

In the third session Tshepo Moreki made his presence felt on the match by inducing an edge from Grant Roelofsen when he had reached a quick 24 and then adding the wicket of Bruce Parsons.

The Dolphins will resume on Monday morning trailing by 121 runs with seven first innings wickets in hand.
