Defending champion Andy Birkett seized a split second opportunity to take the overnight lead in the N3TC Drak Challenge Canoe Marathon from six times world champion Hank McGregor. He told Nick Tatham at the end of the 26km first stage that his ten second lead was not a significant advantage.
