The 65th edition of the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon gets under way at Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday morning. Dave Macleod reports that the K2 or doubles championships title race is unusually competitive.

Any one of five crews could win it this year, with at least 25 crews in the hunt for the top ten gold medals. Watch former world champs Hank McGregor and Jasper Mocke, three times doubles winner Andy Birkett with Lance Kime, Len Jenkins with Soweto youngster Siseko Ntondini, Shongweni duo Sbonelo Khwela and the gutsy Banetse Nkhoesa, and Capetonian Shaun Rubenstein and Thulani Mbanjwa. For the womens however there is one clear fravourite, six times runner up Abby Solms eager to finally step up with her Czech pal and current world champ Anna Koziskova. DEay One id 42km long, with more water than expected in the prevailing drought thanks to Tuesdays storm.

Five times winner Andy Birkett sets off i9n search of a sixth FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon title with his K2 partner Lance Kime. Birkett told Dave Macleod that the 20-16 race was wide open.
