Tooms back for another Howick MTB title crack

Howick With a second Sappi Howick MTB Classic 40km Marathon title to his name in 2017, Howick local Jedson Tooms will be back to defend his title at the popular event on Sunday, 4 March.

Tooms, who managed to fight off a strong local field at the race in 2017, won by over 45 seconds highlighting that his local knowledge and technical skills were superior to the rest of the field which included the likes of Jeremy Thomson and a strong Change a Life Academy contingent.

Despite going into the race this year with the defending champions tag on his head, Tooms spoke with a relaxed attitude and approach to the event over the first weekend of March.

"I really like to go to Howick and just have fun, because that's what it is all about in the end," the ROAG/Quattro sponsored athlete said.

"The course at Howick is basically my back yard and I have grown up riding on those trails which does give me a bit of an advantage. I am expecting a few changes on the course this year because of the tree felling that has been going on.

"The tracks are beautiful and it is an incredible place to ride my bike - it's a place I will always choose to ride, Tooms highlighted.

The 27 year-old will be focusing mainly on the Quattro ROAG Series this year, and the Sappi Howick Classic will fill an important role in his quest to finish atop the overall series log at the end of the year.

"I have been trying to get back into the swing of things recently having started a new job. The change in job has meant that I haven't been on my bike as much.

"I rode in Wartburg last weekend but that didn't go too well for me but I hope that Howick can help me get back into my rhythm.

"It will be another tough race and I'm going to go out there and try my best," Tooms added modestly.

2018s Howick MTB Classic will incorporate an Enduro and a newly added trail run on the Saturday. The Sunday sees the 40km marathon take centre stage but there will be a 20km half marathon and a 10km fun ride.

Creating appealing trails to riders of all abilities is crucial at events that host fun rides; Tooms believes the Howick trail builders have found this crucial equilibrium.

"The 40km marathon tends to be a bit more technical and creating an event that all riders can take part in is important.

"We have some much incredible trail in the Howick area which is great to ride so I always look forward to the Howick MTB Classic," he added.
