Prato turns the tables on his coach at series race two

Durban The pupil turned the tables on his master at the second leg of the Chalupsky Properties Surfski Series on Friday night as Gene Prato outsmarted his coach Matt Bouman to win the Grabgear.co.za race at Marine SLC.

The result is a reversal of the Bouman's win in the opening race of the series a week ago, and the tussle between the two took centre stage on a calm sea at the well-attended race.

"We have been training really hard as a group with Matt and at the warm-up I felt really good, so I just decided to go out as hard as I can and see how long I can hold it," said Prato after the race.

"I managed to hold it for most of the first lap and then Matt came past me at the end of the first lap.

"I tried to stick to his tail as hard as I could when he came past me," said Prato. "On the last downwind leg on the final lap I managed to get past him and pulled as hard as I could to stay ahead to the end.

"I just managed to get one wave ahead of him at the finish line," he said.

Bouman wrapped up second place, with the last spot on the podium going to Bryce Lawson, three minutes further back.

In the women's race Michelle Burn not only added a second successive win to her 2022 CV but also managed to repeat her staggering fifth place overall from a week ago.

The new surfski world champ gave the group of elite men a good run for their money as she raced away to take the women's honours from the Hockly sisters, Saskia and Valmajean.

The doubles honours fell to Colin Simpkins and his son Josh for the second week running, while Senzo Ngcobo and his partner Keelyn Tucker held on to win the short course honours in a tight duel with Lwandile Gasa and Kwanele Banda.

The third race of the series is on Friday 4 February 2022.
