Cream comes to the top in surfski series race three

Durban Former world champions Hank McGregor and Hayley Nixon showed their class as they powered to victories in the Euro Streel race that made up the third race in the popular Friday night Chalupsky Properties Surfski Series.

With Durbanites bracing themselves for bad weather due to arrive in the coming week, the race was held in mild South Westerly winds with novice-friendly small surf, creating conditions that allowed the pedigree paddlers to come to the fore.

Multiple marathon world champ McGregor was drawn into a fierce tussle with the two paddlers that won the opening two races of the series, Matt Bouman and Gene Prato, and they turned after the first lap together.

"On the second lap I managed to get a one hundred meter lead over them, and managed to hang onto that lead on the return leg into the wind," explained McGregor.

"It was great to be back on the start line after a bit of a break from surfski paddling with all the river races leading up to Dusi," he said.

"It is going to be exciting to see how the series play out after three races with three different winners," he added.

Making it a red letter day for their team sponsor Euro Steel at their sponsored race Hayley Nixon took the honours in the women's division after hard race against the Hockly sisters Saskia and Valmajean.

"It was great dicing with Saskia Hockly vying to get a nose into the lead on the downwind leg and back into the wind," said Nixon, the former surfski world champion.

"On the second lap I think all the hours of Dusi training and the muscle memory from downwinds just kicked in and I was able to pull away and stay away to the finish," she added.

Jason Ekstrand and Richard Lowe  took the double ski honours while the ever-consistent Siyaphambili crew of Lwandile Gasa and Kwanele Banda took the short course from clubmates Lungelo Gumede and Senzo Ngcobo.

The fourth race of the series is on Friday 11 February 2022.
