Prato wins again as doubles dominate at surfski series race four

Durban – Gene Prato moved into a dominant position in the popular Friday night Chalupsky Properties Surfski Series by grabbing a second win of the series as the Thule race four was characterised by some big guns electing not to race and several dominant performances from doubles combinations.

Prato took full advantage of the flat seas and mild conditions to get to the front from the start at Marine SLC and cantered home almost a minute clear of second placed Wade Krieger.

"I took it quite hard off the start to see who was around me and got a bit of a lead on the first downwind leg and stretched maybe a hundred metres on everyone," said Prato.

"From there it was just a case of holding it to the end," he added.

With three different paddlers having won the first three races in the eight-race series, the second win leaves Prato holding all the cards, but he quickly admits that the size and quality of the field will change dramatically after the MyLife Dusi.

"A lot of the guys were sitting out for the Dusi this week, so at the next race there will be a lot more competition," he noted.

Unusually the fastest ski on the night was a mixed double crew as race one winner Matt Bouman partnered his protégée Valmajean Hockly to win overall bragging rights from another mixed doubles crew in Jenna and Luke Nisbet.

The race was notable for the absence of a number of traditionally dominant paddlers, many of them electing not to race as part of their preparations for the MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon this week, including last week's winners Hank McGregor and Hayley Nixon.

In sharp contrast the crew of Bridgitte Hartley, who was named this week as the new chair of the International Canoe Federation's Athletes Commission and McGregor's wife Pippa McGregor, used the race as a warm-up for their Dusi campaign, and romped home as the fastest women on the water, and sixth fastest doubles crew overall.

Josh Simpkins won the junior honours impressively, holding of Ben Maehler and the rising Under 16 talent Clyde Barendse.

Matthew Swemmer led Lande Williamson home in the Stand Up Paddle Boarding category.

The fifth race of the series is on Friday 25 February 2022.
