Nisbet and Edward back to defend  Ocean Heroes title

Durban – The ADreach Ocean Heroes will showcase the best ocean athletes South Africa has to offer on Sunday, 7th October at North Beach. The first race commences at 10:30am and is the eliminator which includes board paddling, surf ski paddling, running and surf swimming.

The eliminator provides an opportunity for developing competitors to race against the best, however only the elite will qualify through to the final. The final will start at 11:30am and only 12 men and 8 ladies’ will fight for the prestigious title.

The final race will start 300 meters past backline on the surf ski, followed by surf swim and board paddling with a sprint finish on the beach. This race is unique because competitors are encouraged to utilise the piers whilst paddling through the surf to test their skills and acceleration.

Defending champion Luke Nisbet has experienced a shoulder injury over the past two weeks. In spite of this, he has a strong surf ski background and has recently introduced more transitions, swimming and board paddling into his training schedule for the race.

He explains that a “backline start will bring a lot of luck and fortune into the race.” His strongest rival will be last year’s runner up Connor Botha, especially because the final race will end with the board leg which Nisbet believes could work against him.

Last year’s ladies champion Alice Edward explains that her preparation is going well because her training has been tailored towards World Lifesaving Championships in Adelaide at the end of the year. As a consequence, she is confident she can defend her title, however she still respects her rivals by saying that “her main competition would be Carmel Bilson whom has timelessly proved how strong she is as an ironwomen.”

This will be Bilson’s debut to the ADreach Ocean Heroes and she explains she is excited to race this year, especially because “a race like this is great for a lead up to World Lifesaving Championships.” Bilson further commented that she hopes the event is well supported because of the “hard grind that the athletes put into their training.”

The ADreach Ocean Heroes has also contributed through a Learn to Swim Youth Program which was implemented in Verulam and managed by Mthembeni Mkhize, one of the competitors and professional lifeguard at Umhlanga. He believes the Learn to Swim Program is essential to developing surf safe youth to reduce drownings in South Africa.
