ALFIE COX INVITATIONAL SET TO BE A SPECTATOR’S SPECTACULAR

Multiple motorsports title holder to host epic enduro event in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal South Coast farmlands.

HENDERSON’S FARM, Umzumbe (KZN) – The first-ever Alfie Cox Invitational will feature 40 of South Africa’s top enduro motorbike riders taking on a highly technical and exciting course on 2 April at Umzumbe on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

The event is the brainchild of Alfie Cox, widely regarded as the godfather of South African off-road motorsport, and will run on a ‘Sprint Enduro' format. The event will see a combination of the top riders from the off-road competition circuit, as well as a selection of experienced riders of Cox’s choice race an innovative elimination heat format over the 11-kilometre sprint course designed by off-road racing legend himself.

“The track is an extreme enduro course,” explains Cox, who has won more motorcycle titles than many have ridden races. “You could call it a sprint but it is going to be very technical with obstacles all along the way, so in truth it is going to be very slow going,” he says.

While still racing competitively in his age group, Cox has over the past few years chosen to take another path and nurture the younger talent, manage a racing team and give back to South African motorsport.

According to Cox the riders are in for a serious challenge with a mix of terrain, from muddy river-crossing, to rocky climbs and tight corners on the steep sugar cane farm..

“You know the area around Umzumbe always lends itself to technical riding,” he says. “If the riders want to test themselves ahead of the up-coming off-road season, then obviously this is the race to come to!”

Not usually a spectator-friendly sport, the circuit on Henderson’s Farm will lend itself to exciting racing in the elimination format and make for great live viewing.

Among the 40 starters are likely to be Hard Enduro Ace and reigning SA Enduro Champ, Wade Young as well as Altus de Wet and SuperMoto and Trials legend, Brian Capper.

The format will see 40 riders line-up for round one, from where 30 will progress to round two. These 30 will then be whittled down to 20 who will compete in the final.
