Shezi has mountains to climb to retain his Run The Rivers title

Underberg - As he lines up a fourth consecutive victory in the Euro Steel Run The Rivers trail run in partnership with FNB, Underberg local runner Phillip Shezi will be looking to overcome substantial odds to complete the quartet of back-to-back victories.

The ace runner from Kilmun outside Underberg has had to endure a number of hardships during the eight month Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, and has recently lost his job, making his dream of bringing home the title at his hometown trail running major a lot more difficult.

Despite the cards being stacked against him, Shezi says he is excited to take to the trials again in 2021 to try and retain his Run The Rivers crown.

“Things have not been easy in 2020, but I am excited to race the Euro Steel Run The Rivers again this year,” said Shezi.

As a seasoned runner Shezi had adapted from a road runner to being a very competitive trail runner, and plans his year’s racing around both disciplines.

“I am training for Comrades this year, but as we all know we don’t know what is going to happen with regards to Comrades in 2021,” he said.

His other priority race for 2021 is the 56km Zululand Ultra Marathon that starts in Ulundi and finishes in Nongoma.

Like many other athletes the lockdown period put paid to his chances of running in races and potentially winning prize money, but he kept focussed on his base training for his three priority events.

“I got injured during the lockdown, which was bad, but I was able to recover and I am now back to running at full strength,” he says.

While Shezi looks to make a plan to pay for his entry fee for the two day trail running classic that forms part of the FNB Drak Adventure Weekend, he added that there were other runners who train with him in Underberg who were eager to race the trail run.

The Euro Steel Run The Rivers trail run in partnership with FNB takes place in Underberg on 30 and 31 January 2021. More information can be found at www.drakadventure.co.za.
