Runners to revel in Southern Drakensberg gem

Underberg – The 2022 Euro Steel Run the Rivers, in partnership with FNB, will offer the sold-out field a brand new network of dynamic and exciting trails over the two days of running in the Southern Drakensberg this weekend.

Following the cancellation of last year’s event due to the Covid-19 pandemic many eager runners carried their entries over to the 2022 event, and when normal entries opened, the remaining places in the limited field were snapped up, as other runners fed off that excitement.

The famous Sani Spoors trails that surround the town of Underberg will once again play host to the runners that take on the full Run the Rivers or the shorter Run the Rivers Lite, much of it on the signature trails tthat meander alongside the uMzimkhulu River.

Runners will be greeted to some changes to the trails from 2020 and the organisers are excited for the participants to see what they have in store.

This year’s route will keep runners in the upper uMzimkhulu Valley as opposed to taking them in the Thrombi Gorge and this means that both stages will take place in a circuit route rather than a point to point, making arrangements much more convenient for the runners as they will not have to worry about having to get people to collect them from the finish and will be able to start and finish at the same venue.

This year the start and finish will be based at the Swartberg Road Bridge which will also be the finish of the first day of the Drak Descent.

As is also the case with the Euro Steel Drak Descent, organisers took the decision that this year runners and riders would rather head towards the famous Hodgsons Peak than run and ride with the view of the mountains behind them as has happened in previous years.

The event is split into two races with the Run the Rivers a 48km run split into two days of 24km while the Run the Rivers Lite is 24km split over 15km on day one and 9km on day two.

The Euro Steel Run The Rivers trail run in partnership with FNB takes place in Underberg on 29 and 30 January 2022. More information can be found at www.drakadventure.co.za.
