Hill not distracted by chance to make history at Sappi Scottburgh MTB

Scottburgh – Defending champion Andrew Hill is looking forward to trying to retain his title in the Sappi Scottburgh MTB on Sunday 13th August, while trying hard not to focus on the fact that a win will make him the first multiple winner of the respected men’s title.

Hill brings good form into the event, having won the Imana Wild Ride with his partner Warren Price, going into a full month that will include the Illovo Eston MTB Marathon the weekend before he returns to the KZN South Coast for his Scottburgh title defence.

For Hill, the Scottburgh event, run by local MTB enthusiast Flavio Scarpa and his team as a ‘raw and untamed’ track, is something that he finds appealing.

“I really enjoy riding different trails,” says the TIB Insurance rider. “I think guys get too hung up on smooth, manicured trails, but I really don’t mind riding rougher trails.

“The Scottburgh MTB Club riders are a passionate bunch and they love to showcase their area at the race, which makes it special. There is a great vibe around the event and good media hype, so it is an event that I look forward to,” he added.

He added that the race, which is the third leg of the recently formed South Coast MTB Series, fell into an ideal time of the year.

“I see friends in Cape Town complaining about the rain and the cold. The Sappi Scottburgh race is at a fantastic time of year here. It’s warm, and if we have a little rain beforehand to settle the dust, it can be brilliant MTB riding,” said the Hillcrest based rider.

Hill said he didn’t want to get too far ahead of himself by thinking about the possibility of becoming the first male rider to win the Scottburgh title more than once.

“Look, a consecutive win would be nice, for sure,” he pondered, while at the same taking stock of the fact that he recently failed to finish another South Coast series race, the Ingeli Forest race, after being derailed by a puncture problem early on in the outing.

“I am just looking forward to riding the Scottburgh race again, and trying not to focus on the opportunity to set any records,” the modest Hill concluded.
