10 years later Scottburgh MTB still going strong

Scottburgh – A decade after the first Sappi Scottburgh MTB & Trail Run Weekend was scheduled, 2018 sees the first edition of the trail run element which adds to the appeal of a sporting weekend on the South Coast from 21-22 July.

Maintaining an event for ten years is a difficult task with the mountain biking market becoming saturated with events on every weekend, but being in an area that is fairly secluded from the rest of the MTB world has assisted in Scottburgh’s longevity.

“I always wanted to put on a race in Scottburgh because we had the MTB trails and I thought it was what we needed,” race founder and organiser Flavio Scarpa commented.

“It was always a case of having the money to put on a race and when Billy Harker came on board we were able to get the first Scottburgh MTB Race off the ground in 2008.

“With 52 weekends in a year and 72 races it might have been a difficult sell but I thought that there wasn’t a race within 250km of us so we decided to do it!”

As with all start-up projects it was far from plain sailing early on and the Scottburgh MTB Race can claim to have had the most devastating of introductions to the MTB calendar.

“We were all ready to go in 2008 and then the heavens opened up! We had to cancel the first ever Scottburgh because the weather was so hectic!

“Looking back on it with ten years of hindsight I am glad we couldn’t put on the race because we actually weren’t ready!” a reflective Scarpa added.

Scarpa has been pushing for his event to be included in the Quattro ROAG Series and with the introduction of the trail run to the 2018 festivities the event will form part of the popular KZN-based mountain biking and trail running series.

“Trail running was an element that I have been trying to include and with the team at ROAG telling me that if I introduced a trail run then Scottburgh could be part of the ROAG Series, it was a no-brainer for us!

“Chatting to Ant Foster, who runs the Eston MTB Challenge, he says it’s incredible how much trail running adds to the event, and we are looking forward to welcoming trail runners to Scottburgh for the first time for the various Funky Pants Trail Runs.

“We have got so many trail around here and Gareth Hanson will be showing us the course but we will be responsible for cutting it and cleaning it out,” Scarpa mentioned.

Having had ten years to smooth out the trails for the South Coast classic, Scarpa is excited to welcome riders back to his piece of mountain biking paradise.

“The trails are well rounded and have got a bit of everything for all riders, but will remain true to our motto of being raw and untamed!” an enthusiastic Scarpa added.
