New additions add excitement to Scottburgh MTB

Scottburgh - As the Sappi Scottburgh MTB and Trail Running Weekend draws closer, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the popular South Coast event, trail runners and mountain bikers can look forward to sublime racing conditions after near perfect weather conditions in the build-up to the event.

Founder and the driving force behind the event Flavio Scarpa says the rains last week were light, giving the trails a mild soak, and with no further rains likely the trails will be in near perfect condition on the weekend.

“They are riding and running absolutely beautifully,” gushed Scarpa, whose original idea to start the event as a fundraiser for Cycling For Mobility will be celebrated at the tenth anniversary festival this weekend.

Scarpa said he was looking forward to the riders and runners reactions to a new bridge that he and his son Angelo have built at the ten kilometre mark as part of his drive to continue improving the route.

The 40km ride will take the riders on well-known single track and also into an ever-evolving area of Scottburgh where some residential development and a new Sappi logging yard are being built.

“It will be the most interesting and probably the best trail conditions in the past ten years,” said Scarpa.

He added that the final decision on the lead into the finish would be taken on Thursday after taking the tide at the Mbambanyoni River mouth into account.

This could involve pallets over the beach or using the same lead into the neutral zone that has been used into the past.

“And it may involve a wade across the lagoon,” he added. “I checked with Yankee (top female mountain biker Bianca Haw) and she said that is fine. So if its fine for Yankee it is fine for everyone.” Said Scarpa.

He said that the trails had matured well over the years and were always fine-tuned before the race, but added that he would always strive to stay true to the Scottburgh philosophy of “raw and untamed” trails.
