Haw family supporting Scottburgh MTB

Scottburgh – Fronted by the national women’s Cross Country MTB title challenge of Bianca Haw, the entire Haw family will all be taking part in some way or another at the 2018 Sappi Scottburgh MTB and Trail Running Weekend this coming weekend.

Mom and dad Glen and Mandy will join their children Tamika and Murray in Scottburgh for the sporting weekend, while their talented youngest daughter Bianca races back from the national XCO championships in Bloemfontein early on Sunday to complete the full family presence at the event’s tenth anniversary.

The Haw family have had a long affiliation with the South Coast town of Scottburgh and Glen Haw is the brains behind the KAP sani2c, the largest mountain bike stage race in the world that finishes in the town every year.

“Mandy was brought up in Scottburgh so we basically met there,” ‘Farmer’ Glen mentioned.

“I have been going there for as long as we have been together and we have a house down there so the kids have also spent many days on the South Coast.

“As much as we are from Ixopo and the kids are farm kids they have also grown up in Scottburgh.”

The Scottburgh MTB Challenge heads into its tenth year this year with the longevity of the event showing the quality of the trails on offer. Haw and his family spend many hours riding in the region looking for routes for the joBerg2c and sani2c and offers what he can to support race organiser Flavio Scarpa.

“We help Flav with the basic stuff but help him out as much as we can. He uses a bit of the route that we have developed for sani2c but he likes to take riders further north on his own track.

“It’s great to be able to help out someone who is also in the business of putting on events and also as members of the Scottburgh MTB Club it is a race we need to support the event.”

This year will be the first year that the event will incorporate trail running and Haw and his family have signed up for the 18km Funky Pants Trail Run, on top of the 45km Marathon on Sunday.

“My kids try and keep me active and doing as much as possible so it is going to be a busy weekend for us!”

Mandy Haw is often seen in cars seconding the children on canoeing races and mountain biking events, however on Saturday she will be taking part.

“Mands runs every day with the dogs so she does a lot of running. It’s great for her to take part when a lot of the time she is the super second!”
ter added.
