Hill looks to extend Scottburgh MTB hat-trick

Scottburgh – The 2019 Sappi Scottburgh MTB & Trail Run Weekend will have one of their defending champions back for sure in the shape of men’s 45km MTB marathon winner Andrew Hill who has penned in the South Coast classic on Sunday 21 July as part of his race calendar.

The experienced rider from the Upper Highway area will be going for his fourth consecutive win at this year’s race and it is a race he enjoys taking part in given the fact that it takes place on track that is fairly untouched.

“We don’t really get to ride down there very often so that is always a drawcard for me,” the TIB Insurance rider said.

“There is not a lot of racing down there besides for sani2c so the trail network is unique in that aspect.

“Flavio (Scarpa) is so passionate about mountain biking and is always trying to add in new sections of track and I enjoy heading down to the coast for the weekend. The race takes place at the perfect time of the year.”

The track down at the South Coast has got something for everyone and Hill believes that it is a bit of track that riders need to ride.

“There are some bigish climbs to start and if you keep a good pace you will be rewarded,” he explained. “There is some great single track and it appeals to so many different types of riders.

“It’s a race that doesn’t attract numbers from out of the province but for local riders they really enjoy it and come back to take part every year.”

It’s been a busy start to the year for Hill with a joberg2c victory, an unfortunate sani2c withdrawal and an equally frustrating Sappi Karkloof, but Hill continues to remain upbeat and philosophical about what has happened.

“I wasn’t going to race Karkloof that hard but felt good and was leading the chasing pack when I got a puncture and couldn’t fix it so I took it easy into the finish.

“These things happen in racing so you have to take the good with the bad,” he commented.

It’s going to be a good month of racing in the build up to the Scottburgh 45km marathon for Hill as he heads down to race the Imana Wild Ride along the Wild Coast before he returns for a shot at a fourth consecutive Scottburgh crown.
