Hill back to chase Sharks Trail glory

Hillcrest - Local mountain biking star Andrew Hill will be back to contest the STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure MTB crown at the 2017 edition of the popular festive season kick-starter at Summerveld Estate on Sunday, 3 December.

2017 will see the sixth edition of the STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure and Hill's only blemish was a second in 2015 where he lost out to 2016 Rio Olympian Alan Hatherly over the 40km MTB marathon route. Hill has dominated the race winning all of the other four instalments.

"I have taken a bit of time off in the build up to Sharks Trail and have spent quite a bit of time on my road bike as I start to prepare for next year," Team TIB's Hill said.

"Riding on the road gives you quite a good break and it's a great mental change for me as well as working different muscle groups but I am excited to be getting back on the trails."

The event attracts riders of all abilities as well as trail runners to the picturesque course that takes athletes along the edge of the Shongweni valley. Hill's return to the race is a testament to the popularity of the event and the professional manner in which it is run.

"There is always such a good vibe around the event and even when we had a bit of rain a few years ago people came through and enjoyed the day out.

"With the farmers market, craft beers, stalls and live music it makes for a great day and gets people into the festive spirit.

"For us riders we have always loved the trails here and with the change in the course this year it just refreshes the whole event and will make the race exciting.

"It will take a bit of time to change the mind-set along the new course and we will have to work out where we can make a move and try and refine our tactics," Hill added.

Despite the laid-back atmosphere at the Summerveld Estate, Hill will be looking to win his fifth title this Sunday.

"The race always fits in nicely with my plans going into the new year and it helps in building volume into my training as I can ride to the event and ride home if I want.

"I find that there is less pressure on me at the Sharks Trail, especially being a local, but it would be great to win it again.

"It fits into a good block for me as I look towards the big marathon and stage races next year," he commented.

The 40km MTB marathon race is accompanied by a 20km MTB race, a 10km Family Ride and a Sharkie Kids Ride. There are also two trail runs on offer with an 18km and 9km run available.
