It's official - Splashy Fen 2017 has begun

Underberg - As the Easter-long weekend begins, so too does the traditional pilgrimage of thousands of music-loving fans to the picturesque mountains of the Southern Drakensberg as Splashy Fen Music Festival kicks off for 2017.

Early campers have started to fill out the campsites in the rolling foothills of Underberg as the 28th Annual Splashy Fen Music Festival begins.

With temperatures expected to reach a comfortable 21 today, the oldest and longest running music festival in South Africa will not disappoint!

At the time of this release tickets sales sit an impressive 4455, compared to last year’s 3338 at the same time. Splashy Fenners can still purchase tickets at the Underberg Country Club registration area or at the Splashy Fen entrance gate.

An exciting line-up of over 200 local and international acts ensures that there is something for every music fan, and 50 carefully selected food and craft stalls will cater to every taste.

In keeping with their promise to make each year at Splashy Fen bigger and better than the last, festival director, Stu Berry, is excited about what fans can look forward to this year.

“In addition to our usual offering of world-class entertainment, top security precautions and strategically designed and decorated campsite areas, we’ve got a giant sculpture being assembled by local artist Kim Goodwin, a craft brewery and gin station, graffiti walls, 2 new stage areas and so much more.”

Today’s musical line-up includes the likes of Richard Benhard, Jess Martins and Nishalin Pillay, Chadwick Jubber, Aymira and World DJ, all performing on the woodland inspired Treehouse Stage.

At the Acoustic Stage, fans can enjoy music from Tebogo, Dijon Hoarea, Swamp Riders, Alimho and Storm, Holy Smokes & the Godforsaken Rollers, The Subway Run and a series of Open Mic sessions for those wanting to share their talent with the crowd.

Hailing all the way from Montana, in America, Holy Smokes and the Godforsaken Rollers are a multi-instrumentalist duo who are sure to add a bit of charm and more of the “old Splashy Fen vibes” to the festival this year with their country blues and old time folk and porch music.

From Durban and hot property of The Voice SA, with all 4 chairs turning in his favour, lead vocalist Freddy Lalendle of The Subway Run is a voice to be reckoned with. Unique, talented and unmistakably their own mix of soulful blues, The Subway Run blew the crowd away on many occasions at the 2016 Splashy Fen Revival; and are sure to do the same this year.

Afro-folk singer, songwriter and guitarist Blessing Tangban joins the line-up this year all the way from Nigeria. She is sure to wow the crowds with her witty and honest lyrics and her emotionally stirring melodies. This will be her first time performing at Splashy Fen.

“There is definitely an energy on site today” says Berry. “And our efforts to continue to improve the fan’s experience will not go unnoticed. We’re really looking forward to another positive and successful Splashy Fen this Easter”

This year, Splashy organisers have made a conscious decision to reduce paper usage. As such, the Splashy Fen programs will no longer be printed. Fans can stay up to date with their favourite bands via the Splashy Fen APP, available for FREE on both Apple and Android devices. The APP is a one-stop pocket tool of helpful Splashy Fen information including directions, links to the Splashy Fen social media pages, contact details, a site map, stage line-ups, artist information and more.

Tickets are available at www.splashyfen.co.za, the Underberg Country Club, or at the gate. Day rates are as follows: Thursday – R250, Friday – R350, Saturday – R450 and Sunday – R350. Children under 12 years pay R100.
