Durban pro sets sights on aQuellé Tour Durban podium

Durban - Mount Edgecombe raised pro cyclist Ryan Harris is looking to his small Office Guru Racing team to pull off a David-versus-Goliath feat and take him to the top step of the podium at the upcoming aQuellé Tour Durban presented by Bridge Fund managers on Sunday 29 April.

Sprinter Harris will front the Office Guru Racing team that will include Travis Barrett and Namibian Under 23 champ Alwyn Steenkamp for the 100km classic, a race that he says has a special place in his professional cycling aspirations.

“It is one of the top three classic races, but as a Durban guy, this is a race that I would dearly love to win,” said Harris, preparing with his team for the upcoming four day Tour de Limpopo race that ends on 26 April, after which the team heads to Durban for the Tour Durban.

“It helps that we are coming down from altitude, but we are going to have to play our cards smart,” said Harris, who has been making waves on the local calendar after podium finishes in the Tsogo Sun Amashova and a second place finish in the Emperors Palace Classic where he held out Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Clint Hendricks.

The Emperors Palace result was particularly notable as Harris has been side-lined by a broken collarbone just three weeks before, after a crash in the Berge en Dale race.

“We have a smaller team for the aQuellé Tour Durban than the likes of BCX and ProTouch so we are going to have to follow wheels,” said Harris.

The Under 23 Office Guru Racing team is the brainchild of Nic White who was the driving force behind the successful RoadCover team, and has seen the talent like Harris emerge from the junior ranks and blossom as they continue to train and race in a stable team environment.

White says that much will depend on how well the riders recover from the Limpopo outing.

“The Tour de Limpopo is a UCI category stage race, so the team is taking it seriously. Hopefully their legs will have recovered in time for the Tour Durban, which is just a few days later,” said White.

The aQuellé Tour Durban, presented by Bridge Fund Managers, takes place on Sunday 29 April 2018. More information can be found at www.tourdurban.co.za
