Clint Hendricks confirmed for Tour Durban title defence

Durban – 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Clint Hendricks has confirmed that he will be on the start line with a powerful BCX Team aiming to defend his title in the aQuellé Tour Durban presented by Bridge Fund Managers on Sunday 29 April, eager to test how he has recovered from the gruelling Tour de Limpopo that ends a few days before the Durban classic.

Hendricks blasted to the line in the colours of RoadCover to take the 2017 title, but now has the advantage of starting with an intimidating BCX team that includes Marc Pritzen, another former Tour Durban winner Nolan Hoffmann, Chris Jooste, Steven van Heerden, Brandon Downes and David Maree.

He says that the size and pedigree of their squad will mean that anyone hoping to get to the line ahead of them will have a lot of hard work to do on the course, and says, while the team race plan has not been finalised, he can’t rule out a repeat of the shock early break that shattered the elite peleton going up the M7 climb to Pinetown.

“That was incredible. I don’t think anyone has ever done that before,” he recalls. “We managed to get away and make it stick that early on in the race, when no-one was expecting it.”

“This year we could well take the race by the horns again, and anyone who wants to have a chance in the sprint finish is going to have a lot of hard work to do,” he said.

The challenge this year will be to ensure that they get enough time to recover from the Tour de Limpopo that ends on Thursday, giving them two days to recover and travel to Durban for the aQuellé Tour Durban.

“The turnaround time is very tough and we will have to be smart about maximising our recovery,” says the 26 year old Gauteng-based pro. “Luckily we all know the Durban route, so we will just do a few active recovery rides when we get down there for the race.”

He said that the team strategy would be set just before the race, but added that they had to be responsive to how each rider is feeling on the day.

“Some days you feel like the stars just line up, and you get your chance. Like all pros, you want to win big races like this, but you have to accept that it doesn’t always go the way you might have wanted.

“Luckily we have both Nolan (Hoffman) and myself in the team, so we are looking for a team win first,” he added.

The Paarl raised ace said that his winning streak made him the rider that all the other elites were trying to beat. “The other riders expect you to come back and be really good, which can be tough. They all want to beat you!” he said.

According to Hendricks the 25th edition of the aQuellé Tour Durban would in all likelihood be another duel between his BCX Team and the strong ProTouch outfit, with the young Office Guru team ready to shake up the podium.

“Expect Ryan Harris to be strong because this is his local race because he grew up in Durban,” said Hendricks.

He added that the Tour Durban has always been a favourite race of his, and he looked forward to the 100km classic each year.

“It doesn’t suit any one particular kind of rider because you have to be a good climber and sprinter to do well, a real all-rounder.

“The roads are excellent – probably the best we race on – and the weather is always good. There is just such a great vibe around the event – the people are so friendly,” he said.
