Kimberley roadie eager for Tour Durban

Durban – In the steady flow of entries for the aQuellé Tour Durban on the first weekend of September, the road race entry from Kimberley-based cyclists Roscoe Miller reflects the Durban’s classic’s enduring appeal to road riders across the country.

42 year old Miller is a relative newcomer to road cycling, having only started riding two years ago, but he quickly added the aQuellé Tour Durban to his bucket list of iconic South African cycling races.

“I set myself a goal of trying to do the “Big Road” events on the cycling calendar around the country, and the aQuellé Tour Durban suited my calendar this year,” said Miller.

Miller cuts a lonely figure training on his road bike training on the roads around the Northern Cape, where he says cycling is popular but largely amongst the off-road enthusiasts.

“There are not many events in the Kimberley area for us roadies, the MTB scene is a lot bigger and more active in terms of events and social rides,” he said. “Cycling is however growing among the 30-45 age groups.”

Miller will make the trip to Durban with his young family, and will use it as a chance to spend time with his family in KwaZulu-Natal.

“It will be my kids first trip to Durban’” he said. “COVID really put a hold on us being able to travel as a family.

“My twins are turning four in September and before the pandemic we managed to travel to Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Namaqualand, Karoo and the Kalahari with them,” said corporate CFO from Kimberley.
