Griffioen treading into UTD unknown
Underberg – Despite being the national trail long-distance champion,
Nicolette Griffoen still sees herself as a novice when it comes to
ultra-trail running and steps into the unknown from a personal and
competitive point of view when she takes on the Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg
on 30 April 2017.
Although Griffioen is no stranger to Ultra-Trail events having won the
Ultra-Trail® Cape Town in 2014 as well as the South African Ultra-Trail in
2015, however the 24 year-old believes that she doesn’t want to tie
herself down to one discipline when it comes to trail running.
“I still think that I have a lot to learn about long distance running and
I only took part in my first Ultra for fun and to gain a bit of
experience,” the K-Way/Inov8 athlete mentioned.
“I don’t tend to stick to a certain discipline or distance as I like to
mix things up and keep changing as different places and different types of
races keep me happy!”
For Johannesburg-based Griffioen, taking on the trails of the Southern
Drakensberg will be an entirely new experience, one that she is looking
forward to given her out-going and open-minded attitude.
“I am only familiar with the Northern Drakensberg so I’ll be relying
heavily on my navigation equipment to get me from point A to point B!
“My biggest motivation for entering the UTD was taking on trails that I
have never run before in mountains that I have never seen before!” an
excited Griffioen added.
One of the factors that will draw some of the competitors to the
Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg is the fact that the race is a qualifier for the
iconic Ultra-Trail® Mont Blanc in France later in the year, despite the
appeal Griffioen is not being tempted by the opportunity.
“I am still young and not too experience when it comes to ultra-trails so
I don’t have any wish to do UTMB just yet!
“I don’t think that I am ready for 160km!” she laughed.
As with all Running Man Adventures events a significant portion of each
entry will be donated to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and we are also very
pleased to announce that UTD will be partnering with Wildlife Act (www.wildlifeact.com)
and assisting them to raise funds and awareness.
