Green hoping for UTD glory

Underberg – As the inaugural Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg looms ever larger, the elite field is starting to take shape, with experienced campaigner Jock Green sounding his intentions to be the first winner of the race on Saturday 29 April.

Green’s focus is on winning the Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg; he made that statement clear despite having no experience in Drakensberg conditions.

“I am not familiar with the Drakensberg,” the Salomon sponsored athlete mentioned.

“But the fact that it is a new race does level the playing fields slightly and I think that with it being a first-time race everyone is going to be starting on the same foot, so to speak.

“Just being able to take part in the first event of its kind in the Drakensberg was a real draw card for me and I am really looking forward to the event.

“There are going to be some really strong runners but I am going out there to win the 100km event!”

Having studied the profile of the race and how he feels it will pan out; Green believes that the course will be well suited to his strengths.

“I know a couple of the guys that I am going to be racing against and I have an idea of where their strength lie so I feel that the profile of the UTD will play into my hands as there doesn’t seem to be as much technical stuff.

“I am a lot more of a runner than a climber and I think that from what I have seen online that will a benefit for me,” the 42 year-old added.

For the veteran of all three Ultra-Trail® Cape Town events, Green’s calendar had opened up over the autumn period which allowed him to pile all his physical preparation for the Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg 2017.

“I was training for Comrades as well as UTD because with the gap between events there is a chance that you can do both, but I decided that this would become my focus for the first half of the year so I am not doing the Comrades anymore.

“The timing was just right for me and to have it at the end of April gives me enough time to be fully prepared for the event.

“I have planned for this race and I am really hoping that I can do well. I know how tough it is to beat the top guys but I am looking forward to the challenge,” Green expressed.

There is currently a CANSA deal that is limited to the first 50 registered scholars, and offers them an entry into the Rock Jumper, which normally costs R1250, by making a R150 donation to CANSA when entering on the race website www.ultratraildrakensberg.com

As with all Running Man Adventures events a significant portion of each entry will be donated to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and we are also very pleased to announce that UTD will be partnering with Wildlife Act (www.wildlifeact.com) and assisting them to raise funds and awareness.
