Densham's debut 100 Miler out to break 'jinx'

Underberg - The word amongst ultra-trail runners is that you don't want the number one bib, but for first UTD160 entrant Debbie Densham, she will be ignoring this when she takes on her debut 100 Miler at the 2018 Ultra-Trail Drakensberg starting at the Lesotho border post on Friday.

It is believed that the number one bib is cursed and those who wear it are the least likely to finish but Densham's confidence in getting her entry in first should help her steer her clear of the hoodoo.

"I just couldn't get enough of the beauty of the route during the UTD100 last year, so much so that as soon as the entries opened for the UTD160 I had to get mine in!" an excited Densham commented.

"Don't get me wrong, it was an incredibly difficult run last year and I was on course for about 27 hours but to see the Berg at night was something special and something I think everyone should see.

"I spend quite a bit of time in the Southern Drakensberg during December and absolutely love it up there so as soon as I heard Spurgeon (Flemington) was adding a 100 Miler to the event I had no hesitation!"

Densham's commitment to the UTD160 is admirable, but the decision to make her debut in a 100 Miler had already been decided, luckily the UTD160 just quickened the process.

"I was going to take part in the Karkloof 100 Miler which was going to be my first but that is later in the year so I was lucky when the opportunity to enter the UTD160 came along.

"I have always wanted to take part in a 100 Miler and to do it in the Drakensberg will make it that much better.

"As much as I know the Southern Drakensberg I am not familiar with the Lesotho section as I have only been through there once but it is going to be an incredible experience!" she added.

The Durban-based runner has been battling to contain her excitement for the event which gets underway at midday on Friday, but is excited by the prospect of being amongst the majesty of the mountains.

"My nerves are pretty frazzled!" she exclaimed. "I cannot concentrate properly and I am just making sure now that I have got everything packed before we head up to Underberg.

"It's going to be such an incredible experience and I cannot wait to be in the peace and quiet of the mountains. It will give me a good chance to have some alone time because I am sure that I won't see many other runners while I am out there!"
