Happiness all round as Raceday fashion winners announced

Durban - The quality of the 2018 Vodacom Durban July Raceday fashion competitions was once again at its highest with the four awards for Class Racewear for man and women, as well as Exceptional Hat or Fascinator and Most Striking Couple handed out at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday.

The judges were always going to be in for a tough time with the judging of the Classic Racewear male and female with a number of strong entrants in line for the title. In the end designers Nkhosi Mhlungu (men) and Zandile Maphumulo took home a brilliant array of prizes from various sponsors.

"I have been designing clothes for close to a decade and to win something like this is an incredible feeling!" Zandile Maphumulo said after her win.

"It feels like am in the most amazing dream at the moment but I know that this is just a start and there are big things to come!"

Bolting up on to the stage to collect his award was the unassuming Mhlungu - a man with a simple inspiration for his award winning outfit.

"I got my inspiration from the musician Sijava who wears a lot of traditional clothing," he commented. "I always had faith that I could win something like this, you always have to believe!"

The Most Exceptional Fascinator or Hat category is always a popular event with a number of different and quirky designs on show, however after all the judging was done Judan Naidoo was crowned the winner for his creation.

"I had three different pieces of headware on show today representing the past, present and the future," he explained. "This one that won was the present and I am so proud that all the hard work has paid off!

"I have hardly had any sleep recently!" he said with a relieved look.

The final award went to the most striking couple and once again there were many potential winners, however it was the creation of Brenda Warring that was pronounced as the winner.

"I knew exactly what I wanted to do as soon as I heard about the theme but it did take a long time to put the whole thing together.

"There was a clock bow-tie that I wanted to build the entire piece around and it all came together beautifully."

Warring is no stranger to the event and has finally managed to get herself that elusive win.

"I have finished third and second here before to finally be a winner is incredibly satisfying!" Warring added.
