Local surf swim crew up for World Oceans Day Swim

Durban – A group of die-hard surf swimmers based out of Durban Surf Life Saving Club has committed to the 2023 Ardagh Glass Packaging World Oceans Day Swim at the Durban Beach Club on 10 June.

The World Oceans Day Swim continues to fight the fight against plastic pollution in the oceans and all proceeds from entries goes towards Breathe Conservation's fight and the hard work they do in this fight.

The group of swimmers gather most mornings and swim a variety of distances along the Durban beach front, and they’ve become big supporters of the surf swimming scene in the city and are eager to continue that support.

“As a group we are passionate about ocean swimming and it’s very close to our hearts and my heart ever since I came to Durban 20 years ago,” Ballito resident Nicole Martin said.

“We get out there every morning and, apart from the swimming, it’s a great way for us to catch up afterwards before we head to work.

“We try and gather around 6am and get our swims in with people all doing different distances, so it prepares us well for the ocean races that we have.”

Martin is part of the Clonard Online Team that provides online home schooling for children and they have generously sponsored the 20 entries for the event.

The group of swimmers that has grown out of the Durban Surf Lifesaving Club has been an important part of Martins’ life and she encourages people to come through and join the group.

“It’s open to anyone,” she enthused. “We welcome anyone who has a passion for ocean swimming, and are a group of people with a special relationship and a tight-knit connection.

“I arrived by myself and love being part of this group of people. I encourage people to come through by themselves, of if they know someone then get in touch and join us.

“We swim as often as possible and might just have to watch the conditions, but you will see us out there most mornings,” she added.

The Ardagh Glass Packaging World Oceans Day Swim will take place on Saturday 10 June and will offer swimmers a variety of options. There is 800m, 1.6km, 3.2km or 5km option. Head here https://roag.org/events/event-info/3997/breathe-world-oceans-day-swim for entry information.
