Captain Vilas guides the Heat to victory in Cape Town

Durban – A captains knock of 75 not out from Durban Heat leader Dane Vilas guided his side to a significant seven wicket Mzansi Super League victory over the Cape Town Blitz at Newlands on Thursday evening.

The Heat were tasked with scoring a difficult 182 for victory after the first innings chopped and changed with the home side wrestling the advantage right at the tail end of their innings.

After captain and talisman Quinton de Kock was dismissed for ten from a brilliantly taken catch by Marco Jansen, the hosts won the advantage with Janneman Malan and David Bedingham scoring freely.

At the 127 run mark Malan fell for 75 to the bowling of Malusi Siboto. Ten runs later and Bedingham became the first of Kyle Abbott’s victims, caught for 44.

Left-arm pacer Jansen then bagged the dangerous Asif Ali for a single, but Liam Livingstone and former Heat man Vernon Philander gave their side the impetuous going into the change of innings.

The Blitz finished on 181 for five with Kyle Abbott picking up two for 32 in his four overs.

Keshav Maharaj was impressive with his left-arm spin finishing wicketless but only conceding 24 in his four over spell.

The Heat soared to 22 in the first ten balls of their innings before Alex Hales was trapped by Dale Steyn for ten. A few balls later the dangerous looking Wesley Marshall was castled in the same over for twelve and the Heat were 24 for two after two overs.

Wihan Lubbe then showed the form he displayed in the first dose of this fixture as he stroked his way to 49 of just 28 deliveries.

The left-arm spin of Mohammed Nawaz was his undoing as he was bowled one short of a second half century of the tournament.

From there the skipper took charge.

Vilas looked assured of himself at the crease and kept his side ahead of the required rate as he and Dave Miller guided their side to a more than morale boosting win.

Vilas’ 75 came from just 52 deliveries and included six fours and three sixes.

Dave Miller played another mature knock, supporting his captain all the way to the final run. Miller made 26 not out off 27 balls and hit one boundary and a match-winning maximum in the final over of the game.

Chatting to the SABC after the win Vilas was more than relieved to get that first win under the belt.

"It's great to get those first real points on the board," Vilas said. "After six points from three rained out games and then to get a win against a side that we lost our first game against was really nice."

Kyle Abbott's final over went for nineteen which took the Blitz to 181 and Vilas knew that it was going to take a quality chase to get them over the line.

"It was a competitive total but I knew that if you are hitting Kyle Abbott like that then it must be a really good wicket because he is one of the best death bowlers in the world.

"That nineteen off the first over really set the tone and then the way Wihan batted was incredible.

"We've got to put a few more performances together but I know that we have the team to do it."

The Heat now return home to face the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium on Saturday.
