Trail builder promises 'more fun' at 2018 Sharks Trail Adventure

Shongweni - Preparations are already underway on the mountain bike trails for the annual STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure at the Summerveld Estate on 2 December, with trail builder Ewan Cochrane eager to add ‘even more fun’ to the popular 40km ride around the hills of Summerveld.

“This is a unique ride in that it comes at the end of the year when most of the top riders have wrapped up their major events, and almost forms part of next year’s training,” said Cochrane. “There are also some very exciting features in the area that we can take advantage of.”

While promising to leave the basic routes for the 40km and 20km routes largely unchanged, Cochrane is hard at work linking the 40km ride to some of the features that were hallmarks of the Hill2Hill ride, and haven’t been used for many years.

“There is an awesome section of switchbacks on the old Hill2Hill route that I will be factoring into the 40km ride,” said Cochrane. “We will climb up a section of concrete strip to get up to the switchbacks but it will be well worth it!”

“There will be some work climbing to enjoy the reward. That’s the plan to make sure we add some more fun to what is already a great ride,” he added.

He said that he was not a fan of climbing for climbing’s sake and would also take the 40km riders on new contour paths.

Cochrane said that the popular 20km ride would remain largely unchanged, with some subtle changes, using the format of a fun descent into the Shongweni valley followed by the climb back to the finish at Summerveld.

“We have done a lot of work checking out the area to find the easiest route to return the riders to the Summerveld site, and this route is definitely the easiest and most consistent gradient on the return leg,” said Cochrane.

He said that his team was starting work on the trails early to ensure that they were in excellent condition for the mountain bikers on Sunday 2 December.

“As a mountain biker myself I really like properly groomed trails,” said Cochrane. “Both the 40km and 20km riders can look forward to well-prepared roads and single track.”

The day will also include an easy 10km family fun ride and the popular kids race around the Summerveld complex in addition to the 18km and 9km trail runs.
