All systems go for Sharks Trail Adventure

Shongweni - With ideal sunny and mild weather forecast, the STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure on Sunday 2 December has attracted another massive entry of mountain bikers, trail runners and their families to Summerveld Estate to enjoy the start of the end-of-year holidays, and to meet members of the Currie Cup-winning Cell C Sharks squad.

Located in the shady plane trees of the Summerveld equestrian training precinct in Shongweni, the race base is also the hub of the day’s activities that includes a pop-version of the Shongweni Farmers Market and plenty of live entertainment conducive to families spending the day relaxing in the shade after the sporting activities.

The day starts with the 18km trail run at 6:30am, followed by the start of the 9km trail run fifteen minutes later. Trail builder Ewan Cochrane has promised the steadily growing field of trail runners that support the event more ‘classic Shongweni’ trail that take in the river valleys through dense trees, some steady climbs to excellent viewpoints and the famous crossing of the Shongweni waterfall.

Last year the 18km trail run saw emphatic wins for the Zimbabwean born and Pietermaritzburg based flyer Nomore Mandivengerei in the men’s race and Zoe Papadakis in the women’s race.

The mountain bikes racing starts at 7:30am when the stronger rides set off for the 40km STIHL MTB marathon, followed at 8:30am by the 20km riders. The popular and easy 10km family ride takes place at 10am, followed at 11am by the free Sharkie Kids Ride, where youngsters can run or ride alongside the Cell C Sharks mascot, accompanied by their parents if needed.

Last year Hillcrest ace Andrew Hill (TIB Insurance) won his fifth title at the Sharks Trail 40km race in six years, making him the clear favourite for the 2018 title on his local trails. At the end of a successful year Hill has already confirmed his entry for the defence of his title.

Course designer Cochrane has opted to stay with the reversed layout introduced last year but says he will be adding more contour single track to lessen some of the steeper climbs on the return leg up to the Summerveld race base.

Runners and riders will be met at the finish and handed their medals and a cold aQuellé by Cell C Sharks squad members Mzamo Majola, Hyron Andrews, Tyler Paul, Gideon Koegelenberg, Courtney Winnaar, Ruben van Heerden,
Andrew Evans, Grant Williams, Khutha Mchunu and Kwanda Dimaza.

The special Sunday staging of the iconic Shongweni Farmers market will ensure that there is a variety of food form sale and craft beers and gin, as well as numerous stalls to browse for crafts and Christmas presents.

Popular Durban band The Kickstands will perform live on stage once the last of the races have ended and prize giving formalities have been completed.
